The End

The same show that led to Hyun Joong and Hwang Bo’s skyrocketing popularity also led to their departure. The popularity they were basking in created new opportunities for both of them, filling their schedules to the point where they were heavily exhausted. By mutual agreement, the couple decided to leave the show. Unlike other couples, however, they had to complete their farewells in a week’s time instead of the regular two-week filming in advance. Somewhat cheated out of spending every last minute together, the silent feeling of regret could be seen with every episode counting down to their actual exit.

On the day of their goodbye, they decided to hike up Mount Hallyu together, then walk down and part ways at the bottom. It was understandably one of their solemn episodes, leaving fans with bittersweet memories.

Hyun Joong’s “Kid Groom” nickname was tossed away with this episode. His masculinity stole the show and provided a contrast to his quiet, youthful behavior. When Hwang Bo could no longer express herself he took hold of the situation, calmly expressing his thanks to Hwang Bo for shaping him into a charismatic man under her care. Hyun Joong made a specific point after his message for Hwang Bo’s future partner, stating Hwang Bo wasn’t strong. It wasn’t meant to be an insult, but an analysis of how well he knew her. Her former image as a tough tomboy figure overshadowed her femininity and domestic talents- a personal side of her that the cameras never showcased until their coupling.

Given her older status in the relationship, many of Hwang Bo’s actions have been expressed as “older sister” behavior instead of intimate. However, nothing could have been more evident of her attachment to Hyun Joong than her voice breaking after saying Hyun Joong’s name, making it one of the most heartbreaking moments in We Got Married history. Hwang Bo had the most to struggle with in their relationship and handled it with grace and consideration for both parties. Her concern for Hyun Joong’s health is a key factor in their farewell and ultimately won over her self-proclaimed greed for wanting to spend more time with him.

While the Lettuce Couple has been replaced and are carrying on with their separate activities, Hyun Joong and Hwang Bo have collaborated together and are still leading successful lives. Their quirky humor and active participation on We Got Married is heavily missed by fans, who can only hope they will reunite one day.
